Nature Conservancy & the Natural Heritage NetworkI
served as the national Director of Conservation Systems for The Nature Conservancy
from 1987 to 1994. Under my supervision, my department developed the Biological
and Conservation Data System (BCD), which is a distributed database application
used for evaluating the status of species of concern. The BCD was eventually installed
in 300+ locations. Our
work won international recognition and was honored with the prestigious Computerworld
Smithsonian Award for the category of Environment, Energy and Agriculture. There
are extensive references to the BCD on the web, as shown in this
Google search. The
collective usership of the BCD is known as the "Natural Heritage Network",
or more recently, the "NatureServe Network". In addition to The
Nature Conservancy, the network includes offices in all fifty U.S. state governments,
all Canadian provinces, and various countries in Latin America. The technical
support role for the Natural Heritage Network was transferred from The Nature
Conservancy to a new organization, NatureServe,
in 1999. I was a founding board member of NatureServe when it was created in 1994
under its original name of the Association for Biodiversity Information, and I
created the organization's original website. The current NatureServe website is
not of my creation, but the voluminous species data that is available through
that site is the very information that is supplied and managed by the distributed
users of the BCD.
OtherAs
an independent database application developer under contract to The Nature Conservancy,
I created the "Plots" vegetation monitoring system. This is an MS Access
application which is being deployed in units of the National Park System, the
NatureServe network, and other agencies involved in ecological monitoring. The
application is available for public download from the USGS National Biological
Information Infrastructure (NBII) site here. |
